President John Dramani Mahama has reminded ministers and public sector appointees that his administration’s ban on first-class air travel remains firmly in force, warning that sanctions will be applied to anyone who violates the directive.
Speaking at the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference at the University of Ghana, the President used a personal anecdote to underscore the continued enforcement of the policy.
He recounted a recent flight to Dubai during which an acquaintance and businessman found himself as the only passenger seated in the first-class cabin. According to President Mahama, flight attendants explained that government officials no longer occupy first class due to the ban imposed by his administration.
“And so, all the ministers and public officers are at the back in business class,” President Mahama said, adding that several chief executives and public officials on the same flight were indeed seated in business class.
He stressed that the policy remains fully effective and issued a stern warning to officials, stating that anyone found travelling first class, even if they can personally afford it, will be sanctioned.
The ban, introduced as part of President Mahama’s efforts to promote fiscal discipline and the prudent use of public resources, restricts all government appointees to business class travel for official trips.
