A raging fire tore through sections of the Mallam Atta Market in Accra New Town around midnight, throwing traders and residents into panic as thick plumes of smoke filled the air.
Three fire tenders from the National Headquarters, Flagstaff House, and Circle Fire Stations were swiftly deployed to the scene.
Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours while distraught traders looked on helplessly as their stalls and goods were consumed by the flames.
Although the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, eyewitnesses said it spread rapidly through the congested market, destroying wooden structures and goods worth thousands of cedis.
Officials from the Ghana National Fire Service noted that their efforts were hampered by the narrow alleys and dense layout of the stalls, which made it difficult for fire engines to gain full access to the area.
As of Thursday morning, personnel were still working to completely extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby shops and homes.
No casualties have been confirmed, but several traders are reported to have lost all their merchandise. The police have since cordoned off the affected section of the market as investigations continue into the cause of the midnight blaze.
