The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has inaugurated the new Board of Trustees for the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), urging the members to uphold prudence, transparency, and integrity in managing Ghana’s pension funds.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Accra, Dr. Forson underscored the critical national importance of SSNIT, reminding the board that the institution is “one we will all need one day—when we retire.”
He highlighted the trust placed in the board by the Ghanaian people and insisted that their stewardship must reflect this heavy responsibility.
Dr. Forson also criticized some past SSNIT investment decisions and charged the new board with charting a fresh and responsible course.
He cautioned against the sale of state assets to politically connected individuals, stating firmly, “Please don’t sell state assets to politicians. The President will not accept it, and as your sector Minister, I will be the first to oppose it.”
The Finance Minister assured the board that the government is current on all payments due to SSNIT and pledged continued support from the Ministry to keep the fund solvent and effective.
Chairman of the newly constituted Board, Nana Ansah Sasraku III, acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed the board’s readiness to meet them.
“We are prepared, united, and committed to ensuring that the trust resources are managed with integrity and foresight,” he said.
