The Media Relations Officer at the Lands Ministry, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, has rated the government’s fight against illegal mining (galamsey) at 75 percent.

Speaking in an interview on Ekosiisen, he explained that the assessment is based on interventions implemented so far, compared to the situation the government inherited.

According to him, the government encountered widespread illegal mining activities across several forest reserves upon assuming office, with many areas severely affected.

He disclosed that a number of forest reserves had been encroached upon, with nine completely taken over by illegal miners at the time, prompting calls for a state of emergency.

However, he noted that those fully captured forest reserves have now been reclaimed, describing it as a major success in the fight against galamsey.

Mr. Schandorf added that the introduction of coordinated operational systems, including NAIMOS, alongside other interventions, has significantly strengthened efforts to combat illegal mining.

He maintained that, considering the progress made and measures implemented so far, the government’s performance in tackling galamsey stands at 75 percent.
