A resident of Kasoa New Market has disclosed that a faulty electricity meter sparked the devastating fire that swept through part of the market in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.

The blaze destroyed more than 360 mini-stores, reducing them to ashes and causing losses estimated at millions of Ghana cedis. Speaking to Adom News, the resident, who assisted fire officers during efforts to control the inferno, said the fire began due to a meter fault.

Meanwhile, Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, confirmed that 364 stores were affected, describing the incident as a major setback for traders.

She also expressed concern over reports that fire service personnel allegedly assaulted some civilians and a journalist during the event, calling the development unfortunate.

The MP appealed to the youth to remain calm and forgive the officers involved as investigations continue.
