Farmer remanded over ginger theft

A 26-year-old farmer has been remanded into prison custody by the Nkawie Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region for allegedly stealing ginger at Gyankobaa near Nkawie.

Kwame Alugu, alias Jansarah, pleaded not guilty and will reappear before the court, presided over by Robert Addo, on August 22.

Police Detective Chief Inspector Ntim Boadu, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, Regina Agyei, owns a ginger farm at Gyankobaa, where the accused resides.

On May 26, this year, at about 3:00 p.m., the complainant visited her farm and met Alugu, who had harvested half a bag of ginger valued at GH₵2,000.

The prosecution said the complainant convinced Alugu to carry the ginger home so they could sell it and share the proceeds, to which he agreed.

However, on their way, the complainant phoned someone and began narrating what had happened. Alugu, sensing danger, fled with the ginger.

A report was subsequently lodged with the Toase Police.

On August 6, the accused was arrested in connection with another theft case. The complainant, upon visiting the police station, identified him as the person who had stolen her ginger.

Alugu admitted the offence in his caution statement and claimed he sold the ginger to someone at Gyankobaa, but failed to identify the alleged buyer.

After investigations, he was charged and brought before the court.
