Fan dies during Ghana vs Chad World Cup qualifier at Accra Sports Stadium

A Ghanaian football supporter tragically lost their life during Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad, held in March at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars ended a six-game winless streak with an emphatic 5-0 victory over the Chadians during the Matchday Five fixture of the qualifiers.

An eyewitness named Rita, who also sustained serious injuries, recounted the harrowing experience in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show on Wednesday, May 7.

According to her, a stampede occurred as fans attempted to force their way into the stadium, resulting in chaos and violent confrontations. “People were pushing from behind, and those at the front had nowhere to go,” she said. “That’s when everything went wrong.”

Rita alleged that some security personnel responded with force, beating several individuals severely.

She also revealed that her brother, Lawrence—who had travelled from Germany to visit family—was caught in the stampede and suffered a serious injury.

He was initially treated at Ridge Hospital in Accra, but due to the severity of his condition, he was flown back to Germany for emergency surgery.

“The doctors said it was urgent, so we had no choice but to send him back. Thankfully, the surgery went well, and he’s recovering now,” she added.

In response to the tragic incident, Charles Amofa, Communications Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has urged all fans who sustained injuries during the match to contact the NSA for support. “We take this matter seriously and encourage affected individuals to reach out to us,” he stated.
