President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the importance of export trade, describing it as a critical national enterprise that must be approached with seriousness and professionalism to drive Ghana’s economic growth.

He made the remarks at the 33rd/34th President’s National Awards for Export Achievements, organised by the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) under the theme “Building a Resilient Export Economy for Tomorrow.”

According to President Mahama, Ghana must deliberately strengthen its export sector to remain competitive on the global market and generate the foreign exchange required to support national development.

“Export is a serious business. We must not joke with it. If we want to grow our economy and earn the foreign exchange we need, then we must do exports properly and do them right,” he said.

The event brought together government officials, policymakers, exporters, industry players and other stakeholders, including the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Members of Parliament and private sector leaders.

Several individuals and companies were honoured for their outstanding contributions to promoting Ghanaian products on the international market.

President Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to expanding Ghana’s export base, noting that exports play a vital role in job creation, economic growth and currency stability.

“When our exporters succeed, Ghana succeeds. Exports contribute positively to our economy, create jobs and help stabilise our currency,” he stated.

He also highlighted the importance of empowering young people through entrepreneurship, stressing that their success is central to national development.

“If our young people succeed in business and in life, then Ghana as a nation will also succeed,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, reiterated government’s commitment to supporting small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) to expand their export activities.

She said targeted policies and strategic interventions are being rolled out to help Ghanaian exporters access international markets and remain competitive globally.
