Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has started a controlled release of excess water from the Weija Dam as water levels near capacity due to the rainy season. The company is urging residents in downstream communities to evacuate immediately to avoid any potential disaster.
In a statement issued on Friday, May 23, GWL reported that the water level at the dam has reached 45 feet, just two feet below its maximum operating level. To protect the dam’s structural integrity and prevent flooding, a minimal spillage has been initiated.
GWL’s management is cautioning all inhabitants living downstream to move to safer grounds as a precautionary measure. Communities at risk include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adakope, and the surrounding areas.
The company advises residents in these zones to relocate immediately to higher ground and to follow all safety guidelines from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant authorities.
In addition, GWL has appealed to the Ga West Municipal Assembly to desilt the estuary and clear refuse along the river course. This is vital to ensure the free flow of water into the sea and to reduce the risk of flooding.
The statement concluded with a call for public cooperation: “We kindly request all affected residents to remain cooperative and adhere strictly to safety instructions issued by the Municipal Assembly to ensure their safety and prevent any untoward incidents.”
GWL emphasized that community collaboration is essential to avoid a repeat of past flood disasters caused by dam overflows.
