EPA partners with Melcom to roll out free E-Waste collection initiative

-

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has introduced a new initiative to help Ghanaians safely dispose of old and unused electronic devices through designated drop-off points at selected Melcom branches in Accra.

The move, in partnership with Melcom, forms part of the Authority’s efforts to promote responsible e-waste management and protect the environment from hazardous materials found in discarded electronic items.

Under the initiative, Ghanaians can now deposit used electronics such as mobile phones, laptops, batteries, cables, and blenders at the Flower Pot (Spintex), North Kaneshie and Madina branches of Melcom.

For bulkier electronic waste such as refrigerators and other large appliances, EPA has introduced a convenient free pickup option through the GH Waste App, available on both the App Store and Google Play.

The app allows users to sign up, schedule pickups at their convenience, and track the process in real time.

In a statement, EPA cautioned the public against mixing e-waste with household refuse, noting that such materials contain harmful substances that can contaminate soil, water, and air if not properly handled.

The authority emphasised that the initiative supports Ghana’s broader environmental sustainability goals by encouraging citizens to participate actively in reducing pollution and promoting safe recycling practices.
