Ending galamsey is far-fetched – Collins Owusu Amankwah slams NDC

Collins Owusu Amankwah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia North constituency

Former Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah, has slammed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over its handling of illegal mining, describing its pledge to end galamsey as “far-fetched.”

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Owusu Amankwah accused the NDC of deceiving Ghanaians with promises they made before assuming office.

“Those with licenses are also being affected by galamsey and are likely to sue the government. UTAG has realised the NDC deceived them and the entire country. What they said before coming to power and the lies they told against the former government are clear now,” he stated.

He alleged that NDC officials have held meetings with party members and promised them mining leases, with some members actively mining in forest reserves.

“They have exhibited high levels of hypocrisy and double standards. The NDC themselves are culprits, so thinking they will end galamsey is far-fetched. They have failed in the galamsey fight,” he added.

His comments come after the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) issued an ultimatum to President John Dramani Mahama, demanding the immediate fulfilment of his campaign promise to eradicate illegal mining.

In a statement released on Sunday, July 20, UTAG’s National Executive Council warned of possible industrial action if decisive measures are not taken.
