A late-night fire outbreak at a cold store in the Nsawam Main Market has been linked to an electrical fault, authorities have confirmed.

The incident, which occurred on March 26, 2026, involved the Jodorf Cold Store and was reportedly triggered by an explosion from an electricity meter.

Residents in the area managed to extinguish the fire before firefighters from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station arrived at the scene. A six-member crew later assessed the situation and ensured there was no risk of re-ignition.

As a precautionary measure, the Electricity Company of Ghana disconnected power supply to the area following the incident.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was caused by an electrical fault, which led to the complete destruction of the meter. No casualties were recorded.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns about electrical safety in market areas, with authorities urging traders to regularly check their electrical installations to prevent similar occurrences.
