Residents of Kwahu Ekoso in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region have staged a protest against Abilas Mining Company Ltd over its plans to begin mining operations in the community.
The residents fear the project could destroy farmlands, pollute water bodies, and degrade the environment, thereby threatening their livelihoods.
Assembly Member for Ekoso, Emmanuel Larye, said the people will resist any mining activity, even if the company possesses legal permits.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu West, Tamimu Halidu, has however appealed for calm.
He urged both the community and the company to engage in dialogue and reach a consensus, noting that Abilas Mining Company has obtained the necessary legal documents for its operations.
Meanwhile, CEO of Abilas Mining Company, Alhassan Salifu, expressed confidence that residents will eventually appreciate the benefits of the project, assuring that the operations will be conducted in a responsible manner.
