Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu says government is taking steps to address the concerns of striking teachers and bring the ongoing industrial action to an end in the coming days.

Mr Iddrisu said resolving the dispute remains a priority and indicated that he would personally be involved in efforts to address the outstanding issues and facilitate the teachers’ return to the classroom.

“For me, as I said, it is an escape from problems that I will run back to, to go and resolve the strike, and that I will do in the next few hours and days. We will get the teachers back to work,” he said.

The Minister also restated government’s commitment to its October 16 deadline for a supplementary salary arrangement through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department.

“Be assured that I gave my word that the Controller and Accountant-General will do a supplementary salary arrangement by 16th of October. That will be honoured in observance and not in breach,” he said.

He said the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission would continue engagements with the striking teachers as government works towards resolving the issues at stake.

Mr Iddrisu also appealed to the teachers to consider the impact of the strike on students and the academic calendar.

“I plead with them once again to keep the calendar safe and secure,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the outstanding concerns would be resolved and the teachers would return to the classroom, while reiterating government’s commitment to the October 16 deadline.
