The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has unanimously declared its support for Ghana’s candidacy for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in 2027.
The decision was captured in a formal recommendation—C/REC.1/12/25—adopted during the Council’s Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session held on Thursday, December 12, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria.
In the resolution, the Council acknowledged Ghana’s significant contributions to ECOWAS and the continent’s international standing. It also noted the official request from the Government of Ghana seeking the backing of Member States for its AU chairmanship bid.
The Council stressed the importance of strengthening the presence of ECOWAS nationals in leadership positions across regional and international organisations, including the African Union. It further emphasised coordinated support to safeguard and advance the region’s interests at the continental level.
Accordingly, the Council recommended that the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government adopt a common position endorsing Ghana’s candidacy for the AU Chairmanship in 2027.
The recommendation was signed by H.E. Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
