The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti South Region has disclosed widespread power theft in galamsey-prone areas, with Obuasi, Manso and Dunkwa identified as major hotspots.
Speaking to Adom News, the Ashanti South Regional General Manager, Ing. Jonathan Adjabeng, said massive system losses—largely driven by illegal connections in mining communities—are severely affecting the company’s revenue mobilisation efforts and creating significant operational challenges.
He described the situation as one of ECG’s major setbacks this year, noting that it continues to undermine operational efficiency in the region.
Ing. Adjabeng further revealed that taskforces under the Revenue Protection Unit are often attacked during enforcement and mobilisation exercises in these areas.
Despite the challenges, he assured that the company will intensify enforcement operations and impose surcharges on culprits to curb the menace.
