Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey has denied claims that she authorised the arrest of the Kwahu Queen Mother, Nana Adwoa Gyemtua III, calling the reports “false” and a misrepresentation of facts.
The clarification comes after Agoo 96.9 FM aired a video in which a chief, Nana Nilm Sarpong, Abene Bamuhene, alleged that the Minister confirmed sanctioning the arrest.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the Minister rejected the claim, emphasising that she never authorised the Queen Mother’s arrest.
She explained that on December 1, a delegation of Kwahu chiefs visited the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council to update her on the incident and follow up on a referral from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), C.O.P. Christian Tetteh Yahuna.
According to Minister Awatey, the chiefs reported that the IGP had apologised for the arrest, noting it was carried out by police officers and that he had ordered an investigation into their conduct.
She said she also apologised to the chiefs—not because she sanctioned the arrest, but because she is head of the Regional Security Council.
“Never in my submissions did I categorically say that I ordered the arrest of the Obahemaa,” she stressed. “I take responsibility not because I sanctioned it, but because I am in charge of those who were supposed to have acted better.”
The Minister urged the public to disregard the misleading reports, describing them as attempts to tarnish her reputation and that of the Regional Security Council. She reaffirmed her commitment to peace, neutrality, and stability in the Eastern Region as efforts continue to resolve the ongoing dispute.
