A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has explained that the party’s decision to hold its presidential primary early is aimed at reducing internal divisions and fostering unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the former Managing Director of STC said the move follows rising tensions within the party over the flagbearer race.
“The main source of division in the party often comes from the presidential primaries,” he said.
“That’s why the National Council, after thorough deliberation, overwhelmingly agreed that we should elect a flagbearer early enough to allow the party to refocus and unite.”
According to Nana Akomea, the proposal for an early primary was originally put forward by former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, who is also a contender in the flagbearer race—proving that the decision was not made to favour any individual.
“The constitution allows for the primary to be held within two years, with at least six months’ notice. This is not about favouritism. If it were, the person who proposed it wouldn’t be a candidate himself,” he explained.
He called on party members to embrace the decision in the interest of long-term unity and grassroots cohesion.
“If you are someone who loves the party, are you not worried about the division and the turmoil among the grassroots that is boiling up because of the flagbearer race? Anyone who loves the party should support the decision.”
