DVLA to issue personalised number plates from January 2026

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has unveiled a new vehicle registration reform that will take effect in January 2026, allowing number plates to be issued in the names of individual owners rather than vehicles.

The DVLA says the initiative is aimed at improving road safety and enhancing security by ensuring that each vehicle number can be traced directly to its rightful owner.

Under the new arrangement, number plates will become the personal property of the owner.

Vehicle sellers will therefore be required to remove their plates when transferring ownership, while buyers will need to register and obtain their own unique numbers.

“Once the policy takes effect, vehicle owners are encouraged to regard their number plates as personal identifiers, with the added duty of protecting them,” the DVLA stated.

The Authority explained that the reform will help law enforcement agencies trace vehicle-related incidents more efficiently and promote accountability across the transport sector.

DVLA further highlighted that the system will prevent the fraudulent use of registration numbers and support investigations into crimes involving vehicles, ensuring stronger oversight within the country’s transport network.
