Ghana is set to introduce a new vehicle identification system, with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) beginning a pilot of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-enabled number plates.
The pilot is aimed at testing the new plates and the processes that will support their use before the system is rolled out nationwide.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, the DVLA said official issuance of the RFID-enabled plates is expected to commence in January 2027, beginning with vehicles being registered for the first time.
The move forms part of efforts to modernise vehicle registration and identification in Ghana following the passage of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519).
According to the DVLA, the new system is expected to strengthen vehicle traceability and security while improving efficiency in registration and identification and protecting revenue.
The redesigned number plates will carry a number of security and identification features.
These include the inscription “REPUBLIC OF GHANA” at the top, the Ghana flag positioned at the top-right corner, a biennial renewal sticker ring at the top-left and the region of registration displayed at the bottom.
A watermark of the map of Ghana will also be embedded at the centre of the plate.
The registration numbering system will equally change under the new arrangement.
The registration number will be followed by four letters. The first two letters will identify the Registration Centre Code, while the final two will be randomly generated identification marks rather than letters assigned sequentially.
Another major change is the removal of the year of registration from the number plates.
The DVLA said it will subsequently announce the modalities and commencement date for the re-registration of vehicles that are already registered.
The Authority has urged vehicle owners and other road users to familiarise themselves with the changes, assuring the public that detailed information will be provided ahead of each phase of the rollout.
