The Minority in Parliament has taken aim at the government and Energy Minister John Abu Jinapor over persistent power outages, calling for immediate, concrete solutions instead of excuses.
At a press conference held in Parliament, the Minority urged the government to provide lasting remedies to the energy sector’s challenges, stressing that rhetoric alone cannot resolve the worsening situation.
Ranking Member of the Energy Committee and MP for Asenso/Manso/Akroso, George Kwame Aboagye, underscored the importance of a proactive approach by the government, particularly under the Mahama-led administration.
He noted that the erratic power supply, widely referred to as dumsor, is already taking a toll on both individuals and businesses.
The Minority further alleged that Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have identified current challenges as partly rooted in what they described as unsustainable power agreements signed during the first National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
Meanwhile, Collins Adomako-Mensah, MP for Afigya Kwabre North and former Deputy Energy Minister, expressed concern over what he described as the Energy Minister’s inconsistent statements. He warned that such remarks could have negative implications for the energy sector and its stakeholders.
MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, also called for urgent intervention, urging the Finance Minister to release funds to settle debts owed to IPPs in order to stabilise electricity supply nationwide.
