A Presidential Staffer, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has thrown her weight behind calls for MultiChoice, operators of DStv, to reduce their subscription prices in the country.
Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews on Tuesday, Ms Jantuah echoed sentiments earlier expressed by Communications Minister Sam George, stating that DStv’s high subscription fees are unjustified given the dated nature of much of its content.
“I agreed with the Minister, they (DStv) should reduce their prices because their content is even horrible. I keep DStv in my home because of the men in my house,” she said.
“Sometimes when you look at the summary of the film, 1978, apart from the African Magic content, all the foreign content is old,” she added.
The call for price reduction follows widespread outcry on social media and in Parliament after MultiChoice Ghana implemented new tariff rates in July 2025. Many subscribers lamented that the platform’s premium pricing does not reflect the quality or freshness of the content on offer.
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, speaking at the Government’s Accountability Series, issued a stern ultimatum to DSTV, warning that the broadcaster’s licence will be suspended by Wednesday, August 7, should it fail to reduce its subscription prices in for Ghanaians in line with regulatory expectations.
He argued that the company’s operations must be aligned with Ghanaian consumer interests and not driven solely by profit.
Following that, MultiChoice in a statement on Sunday, August 3, described the Minister’s comments as regrettable, particularly given the company’s ongoing efforts to engage in open and constructive dialogue with the Minister and the National Communications Authority (NCA) over the matter.
Meanwhile, the minister has reaffirmed his commitment to pursue regulatory measures against the company, insisting that their services are unfair and that excessive subscription charges are imposed on Ghanaian consumers.
