The Minority in Parliament has called for the dismissal of Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, accusing him of misleading Ghanaians in the recent standoff with MultiChoice over DStv pricing.
At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, October 2, Charles Owiredu, Deputy Ranking Member on the Communications Committee, said the minister’s claim of securing a 30% reduction in DStv subscription fees was false.
According to him, MultiChoice later clarified that the initiative was only a temporary promotional offer, not a negotiated cut.
“His failure to grasp key issues during meetings and communicate the actual outcomes, or his deliberate fabrication of what was never achieved, is evident,” Mr. Owiredu.
The Minority further accused the minister of sidelining regulators such as the National Communications Authority (NCA) and taking unilateral decisions that threaten the digital industry.
They also demanded accountability for fines Sam George claimed to have imposed on MultiChoice, insisting Ghanaians deserve clarity on how much was collected and how it was used.
The caucus issued three demands: that the minister apologises to the public, discloses details of the alleged fines, and resigns, or be dismissed by President Mahama.
“For this display of ineptitude, incompetence, and penchant for deceit, we deem him unfit to continue as Minister,” Mr. Owiredu stressed.
