A fatal accident at Winneba Junction along the Winneba–Cape Coast highway on Monday has claimed the life of a taxi driver and left nine others, including three school children, in critical condition.

The accident involved a Hyundai Dawod taxi with registration number CR 748-20 and a Toyota RAV4 bearing registration GN 5505-18.

According to eyewitness accounts and emergency responders, the crash occurred when a Sprinter Benz bus made a reckless overtaking, causing confusion on the road.

The Toyota RAV4, which was heading toward Winneba from Mankessim, reportedly attempted to avoid the oncoming Sprinter bus and veered into the path of the taxi.

The resulting head-on collision was devastating, with the taxi driver dying instantly.

The taxi was said to be transporting school children from Winneba to Apam at the time of the crash. All injured victims were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Medical personnel have described the condition of three of the children as critical.

The Ghana National Fire Service, which responded to the distress call, confirmed the sequence of events and noted that investigations are underway to locate the Sprinter bus and its driver, who reportedly fled the scene.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise greater caution and restraint on the roads, particularly during peak travel hours.
