Dr. Betty Krosbi Mensah, National Coordinator of the National Recreation and Wellness Programme, has elaborated on the initiative’s mission, emphasizing its relevance for every Ghanaian.

In an interview with Sporty FM, Dr. Mensah explained that the programme was designed to shift focus beyond professional sports, promoting everyday health and wellness across the population.

“Many deaths in Ghana are linked to non-communicable diseases, which largely result from lifestyle choices,” she noted.

“Encouraging regular exercise, healthier diets, and routine medical check-ups can not only save lives but also reduce the strain on our hospitals.”

Dr. Mensah traced the programme’s origins to a vision by former President John Dramani Mahama, who recognized that while sports had traditionally focused on youth and elite competitions, the broader public’s need for active living had been overlooked.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports originally concentrated mainly on professional sports,” she explained. “The President saw the need to give equal attention to the general public, ensuring that everyone—children, adults, the elderly, and persons with disabilities—has the opportunity to lead an active lifestyle.”

She added that nearly 45% of deaths recorded by the Ghana Health Service are caused by preventable non-communicable diseases.

“By addressing lifestyle-related illnesses, we reduce healthcare costs and improve overall national performance. It’s about enabling Ghanaians to live healthier, more productive lives,” Dr Mensah said.

The coordinator praised the initiative as a forward-thinking move.

“If we are not healthy, our potential is limited, and the healthcare system bears the burden. A focus on prevention—staying active, eating well, and monitoring our health—can make a tremendous difference,” she concluded.
