Dormaahene wages war on illegal logging in forest reserves

The Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Oseadeayo Dr Agyemang Badu II, has expressed deep concern over the widespread destruction of the Asikasu No. 2 and Diabaa Forest Reserves in Dormaa Ahenkro due to illegal logging.

Describing the environmental damage as “profoundly disturbing,” the Dormaahene called for urgent and decisive action to halt the degradation.

He announced plans to form a dedicated anti-illegal lumbering task force, supported by permanent security checkpoints at all access points to the reserves. The team will be equipped with advanced audio-visual surveillance systems to monitor, detect, and record unlawful activities in real time.

Emphasising the importance of ethical conduct, Osagyefo Dr Badu II cautioned prospective task force members against engaging in bribery, corruption, or collusion with offenders, insisting that the initiative must be built on integrity and public trust.

He also urged security officers and task force personnel to carry out their duties with professionalism, fairness, and determination, even in the face of intimidation or political pressure.

This move marks a shift toward a community-led approach to environmental protection in the Bono Region, blending traditional leadership with modern enforcement tools to safeguard one of the area’s most critical natural resources from permanent destruction.
