The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has issued a stern warning to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to refrain from any actions that could undermine the independence of the judiciary.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, May 5, Mr. Ahiagbah criticised what he described as a politically motivated attempt by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remove the Chief Justice.
He alleged that the NDC was exploiting legal loopholes to pursue a partisan agenda under the guise of legality.
“This whole agenda has been cooked. The law is just being used to give effect to their politics,” he claimed.
Mr. Ahiagbah further stated that while the move may not be illegal, its political motivation threatens Ghana’s democratic principles.
“It’s not an illegal thing — it’s a political thing, and that for me is a threat to our democracy,” he added.
He emphasised that safeguarding the independence of the judiciary was a fundamental aspiration of the framers of Ghana’s Constitution and warned against politicising the judicial system.
“If President Mahama cannot strengthen the judiciary, then he should leave it untouched,” he declared.
According to him, the judiciary is just as crucial as the legislature and executive in a functioning democracy. He warned that any attempt to interfere with the judiciary risks destabilising Ghana’s constitutional balance.
“Nothing will break in this country if the Chief Justice remains in office and the judiciary continues to function independently,” he concluded.
