Alexander Akwesi Acquah, Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against replacing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer ahead of the 2026 party primaries.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Acquah argued that Dr. Bawumia’s experience and proximity to the presidency make him the party’s best chance at retaining power.
“Dr. Bawumia is very close to the presidency. He’s served as Vice President, acted as President, and worked closely with Nana Akufo-Addo for two terms. He has positioned himself well, and it would be a mistake for us to change him,” he said.
He stressed that the upcoming NPP presidential primary should focus on selecting the candidate most capable of leading the party to victory, rather than personal favors or positions.
“It’s not about who gives me a position when we get power; it’s about who can help us win power. Bawumia has more leverage than the other aspirants; his support is organic,” Mr. Acquah added.
Highlighting the Vice President’s track record, he said public recognition of Dr. Bawumia’s contributions is growing despite past criticisms.
“All the lies told against Bawumia are now being exposed. The NDC had nothing on us; the only reason they won was because our people refused to vote,” he remarked.
The NPP is scheduled to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer for the next general elections.
