Concern is growing over the safety of an abandoned and deteriorating classroom block at the Y. B. Demonstration C Basic School in Berekum, with calls for its immediate demolition to prevent a possible disaster.
The classroom block was ripped off by a heavy thunderstorm in 2017 and has remained abandoned since then.
Nearly a decade later, the structure has continued to deteriorate, with its walls and other sections visibly weakened and exposed to the elements.
The condition of the building has raised serious concerns among members of the school community, particularly because pupils still enter the abandoned classrooms and use the area as a playground.
This has heightened fears that the weakened structure could collapse without warning, especially during heavy rainfall or strong winds.
Such a collapse could trap or injure pupils, teachers and other persons around the building, with the potential for fatalities.
It could also damage nearby school property and leave dangerous debris within the school compound.
The concerns have therefore intensified calls for the Berekum East Municipal Assembly, through the Municipal Education Directorate, to urgently assess the structure and demolish it in a controlled manner.
Stakeholders say allowing the building to collapse on its own could have devastating consequences, especially given that children continue to have access to the unsafe structure.
They are appealing to the authorities to act before tragedy strikes and remove the building to provide a safer environment for pupils and staff.
