The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, has expressed concern over remarks by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on LGBTQ+ issues in Ghana.
In a Facebook post responding to a media report, the Bishop questioned the basis of the Minister’s claim that LGBTQ+ rights are not a major concern for Ghanaians.
Quoting the statement attributed to the Minister, Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu highlighted: “The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that issues relating to LGBTQ+ rights are not a major priority for Ghanaians, stressing that the government remains focused on key socio-economic concerns.”
“Really? So which Ghanaian is this minister referring to here? In any case, did we miss a poll on this matter?” he asked, challenging the assertion.
He further called on the government to provide clarity on its position, suggesting that any change in stance should be communicated openly.
“If you have softened your stance on the issue, just tell us. Don’t belittle everyone’s intelligence. Please, be serious!” he added.
The comments contribute to the ongoing public discourse on LGBTQ+ matters in Ghana, where opinions continue to be sharply divided among political leaders, religious groups, and civil society.
