The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has alleged that its member, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has been arrested by officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Kotoka International Airport.

According to the party, EOCO officers, with the assistance of immigration officials, took Mr Aboagye into custody upon his arrival at the airport.

The NPP further claimed that since his arrest, his lawyers have been denied access to him and that his whereabouts have not been disclosed. The party also alleged that no formal charges have been preferred against him.

In a statement, the NPP described the alleged arrest as an act of intimidation rather than law enforcement.

The party argued that Mr Aboagye, who recently announced his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Officer of the NPP, has been an outspoken critic of the government, particularly on issues relating to illegal mining (galamsey).

The NPP is demanding Mr Aboagye’s immediate release or, alternatively, that he be formally charged and brought before a court in accordance with the Constitution.

It also called on EOCO to grant Mr Aboagye unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, citing Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution.

EOCO has not yet publicly commented on the allegations or the circumstances surrounding the reported arrest.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
