A member of the Ghana Football Association Executive Council, Frederick Acheampong, has disclosed that the decision to relieve Otto Addo of his duties as Black Stars head coach was made immediately following the team’s heavy defeat to Austria.
Ghana’s senior national team kicked off their March international window with a friendly at Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion last Friday as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, they suffered a crushing 5-1 loss to Ralf Rangnick’s side.
A subsequent 2-1 defeat against Germany in Stuttgart on Monday prompted the GFA to announce that the 50-year-old coach would step down. Acheampong clarified, however, that Addo’s fate had already been sealed after the Austrian loss.
“Irrespective of the outcome of the Germany match, Otto Addo was going to be sacked,” Acheampong told Kessben FM.
“The decision was formulated after the Austria match; we were just buying time,” he added.
Addo, who guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 World Cup, faced criticism for inconsistent performances, particularly against stronger opponents.
Looking ahead, the Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in May for friendlies against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2 as part of their World Cup preparations.
Ghana, making their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010.
