Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about the first major scandal he encountered after rising to fame, which happened during one of his earliest trips to Ghana.
The singer, who shot to prominence with early hits such as Dami Duro, said the controversy came just about two months after his breakthrough.
Speaking during VIBE Magazine’s “Davido Joins The Vibe Q” interview, he admitted the scandal gave him his first real lesson about the challenges that come with fame.
According to Davido, the incident occurred while he was in Ghana for a booking, where a woman he had spent time with secretly took a photo of him while he was asleep and shared it online.
He explained that the woman had been trying to prove to others that she was actually with him, and the photo quickly attracted attention.
The situation became overwhelming when calls started coming from his family, including his father and sisters, after the image circulated.
Davido said the moment left him panicking and feeling like he could not handle the pressure.
“My manager was the one who banged on my door to inform me. My phone was buzzing non-stop. If I saw a balcony that day, I’d have jumped off, I swear,” he recounted.
He admitted that at the time he was young and still adjusting to the attention that came with celebrity status.
“I was young and I liked women too much. God had to show me at the time. “Those are the kind of lessons you need to grow from,” he said.
He advised young celebrities to understand that popularity makes them targets and that every action can attract public scrutiny.
