Fish sellers at the Dambai Market in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region are urgently requesting better shelter to protect themselves from various health issues.
These vendors, who depend on selling fish to support their families, are increasingly worried about the negative health effects of their exposure to harsh weather conditions.
A visit to the market by Adom News reporter Obrempongba Owusu revealed that under the relentless sun during the day and the unpredictable rains that often sweep through the area, sellers are left vulnerable to numerous illnesses.
The absence of adequate shelter has become a critical problem for these fish sellers, who lament the harsh conditions they face daily.
Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to heat-related illnesses, while rain compromises the quality of their products and increases their risk of waterborne diseases.
In interviews, many sellers reported suffering from skin irritations, respiratory issues, and other ailments linked to their working environment.
They indicated that the situation is worsened by a lack of proper sanitation facilities, which further elevates the risk of illness.
Alongside health concerns, the fish sellers expressed frustration over rising prices for quality fish.
They attribute this increase to disruptions in the supply chain of premix fuel and a growing demand for fish.
As a result, the lack of affordable prime fish has made it more challenging for them to attract customers, leading to declining sales and financial strain.
The fish sellers are therefore appealing to authorities and stakeholders for immediate action to provide the necessary infrastructure.
They believe that constructing proper shelters would not only protect them from the elements but also enhance the overall market experience for customers.
