Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, has urged the government to reduce the number of aircraft it intends to procure and redirect part of the funds into addressing critical challenges confronting Parliament.

According to him, several pressing issues within the legislature continue to worsen due to chronic underfunding, with essential facilities deteriorating at an alarming rate.

He cited the frequent breakdown of lifts at the MPs’ office complex (Job 600), malfunctioning air conditioners in many offices, and other infrastructural concerns that undermine the effective functioning of Parliament.

Mr. Iddrisu argued that it appears the Executive is deliberately starving Parliament of the resources needed to operate efficiently, a situation he believes could weaken the institution’s independence and influence.

He described it as troubling that Parliament received only GH₵1.6 billion out of the GH₵4.6 billion it requested in the 2026 budget, while the government is committing significant resources to the purchase of aircraft.

The MP stressed that adequately resourcing the legislature is essential for strengthening Ghana’s democratic governance and urged the government to reconsider its spending priorities.
