Pupils of Mmen M/A Basic School in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region are learning under precarious conditions, as parts of the school’s classroom infrastructure have deteriorated to a dangerous state.
A visit to the community by Adom News revealed that Class 1 pupils study in a dilapidated structure riddled with visible cracks, sparking fears of a possible collapse.
The headteacher said the situation has persisted for some time, leaving both staff and pupils increasingly anxious about their safety.

Further checks showed that Kindergarten 1 and 2 pupils also endure daily hardships, studying in a makeshift structure without furniture.
Meanwhile, pupils from Classes 1 to 6 are compelled to share a pavilion-like space, making teaching and learning difficult, particularly during heavy rains and periods of intense heat.

Speaking to Adom News, the headteacher, Robert Nkone, described the situation as distressing and appealed for urgent intervention from the government, philanthropists, and other stakeholders.
According to him, since the school was established in 1992, it has not benefited from any government-funded infrastructure project, forcing both teachers and pupils to operate in unsafe and inadequate facilities.
He cautioned that conducting lessons in weakened structures exposes children and staff to serious risks, stressing the need for immediate action to avert a potential tragedy.
The school authorities and community are therefore calling for a rapid assessment and rehabilitation of the affected classrooms, as well as the provision of essential learning materials and furniture to restore a safe and conducive educational environment.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South, Joseph Antwi Awal, has also appealed to development partners and well-meaning individuals to support efforts to address the educational challenges in the area.
He expressed optimism that with the government’s commitment to improving learning conditions in the municipality, coupled with additional support from benevolent organisations, the area can achieve quality and inclusive education for all.
