Commercial services kick off on Tema–Mpakadan railway [Video]

The Ghana Railways Development Authority (GRDA) has officially launched commercial operations on the Tema–Mpakadan railway line.

The service began on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, with the first Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU), one of two newly acquired by the government, making its maiden passenger trip.

The train departed from the Tema Harbour Railway Station at 9 a.m. and made scheduled stops at the Tema Industrial Area and Ashaiman stations before arriving at the Afienya Railway Station at 9:39 a.m.

Joining the inaugural trip, the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, described the development as a milestone in Ghana’s transport history.

He noted that the new service is designed to ease congestion on the roads, reduce accidents, and lower business costs by providing a faster, safer, and more affordable travel alternative.

“This line will not only create jobs in the railway sector but also stimulate economic growth,” Mr. Nikpe said, adding that the initiative is part of government’s wider rail expansion programme across the Western, Eastern, and Central corridors.

He further urged the public to cooperate with authorities to ensure the smooth running of the new service.

GRDA Managing Director, Dr. Frederick Appoh, announced that fares have been set to encourage usage. Passengers traveling between Tema and Afienya will pay GH¢15, while the Afienya–Adorme stretch will cost GH¢25. The full Tema–Adorme journey will be a flat rate of GH¢40.

He also revealed that the Accra–Tema line, currently suspended for repair works, will resume operations on Monday, allowing passengers to connect directly from Accra to Mpakadan.

The 97-kilometre Tema–Mpakadan railway line is part of government’s broader effort to modernise Ghana’s rail transport system.

It was first inaugurated on November 22, 2024, by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The project is designed to improve freight movement, integrate with Volta Lake transport, and strengthen trade links with Burkina Faso and other neighbouring countries.

Authorities say the line will play a crucial role in transforming Ghana’s transport and logistics sector.
