Cocoa prices: Give farmers what you promised – Miracles Aboagye to gov’t

Aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has appealed to the government to uphold its campaign promises by ensuring cocoa farmers receive fair compensation for their hard work.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Wednesday, August 6, Mr. Aboagye criticised the politicisation of cocoa pricing and called for a focus on the well-being of farmers.

“This is a plea. I beg you, these farmers struggle, they suffer, they bleed before they can give us the cocoa,” he said.

“Give them what you promised them. Forget about NPP,” he added, urging a non-partisan approach to supporting farmers.

The new cocoa producer price of US$5,040 per tonne—up 62.58% from the previous US$3,100—is set to take effect on Thursday, August 7, with the opening of the 2025/2026 cocoa season.

It reflects 70% of the gross Free-On-Board (FOB) value of US$7,200 per tonne, as approved by the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC), chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

Despite the increase, the Minority in Parliament has dismissed the GH₵3,228.75 per bag producer price as “ridiculous, unfair, and completely unacceptable,” arguing that farmers continue to face economic challenges despite the improved FOB value.
