Cocoa farmers in Ahafo urged to halt climate-harming practices

-

The President of Asunafo North Co-operative Cocoa Farmers Union in the Ahafo Region, Emmanuel Nana Sarpong, has appealed to farmers to desist from activities that lead to climate change.

Mr. Sarpong made the appeal in an interview with Adom News at Goaso during an engagement with cocoa farmers in the area.

He explained that practices such as deforestation, destruction of water bodies, and illegal mining contribute to climate change, which in turn negatively impacts cocoa production.

He urged the farmers to support the government’s Tree for Life initiative, describing it as a key solution to combat climate change and boost cocoa yields.

The union’s treasurer, Charles Appiah Boamah, also appealed to the government to increase the price per bag of cocoa.

He said this would not only improve farmers’ livelihoods but also motivate them to expand their farms and increase production.

According to him, higher cocoa output allows the union to earn more from buyers, which is then reinvested in social interventions such as building schools, health facilities, and water systems for underserved communities.
