Veteran Ghanaian coach Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong has opened up on the circumstances that led to his abrupt exit from Eleven Wonders, barely a month after taking charge.
Sarpong, who previously coached Great Olympics and Ebusua Dwarfs, was appointed to stabilise the team following the dismissal of Nii Odartey Lamptey after a poor start to the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.
However, after three winless games, the experienced coach stepped aside—a decision that surprised many.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Sarpong revealed that the issues he encountered behind the scenes were far more troubling than he anticipated.
“I was contacted to help fix the situation, but upon arrival, I realised that so many things were wrong within the club,” he said.
“Personally, I did not want a situation where it would be said that I was the one in charge when the team got relegated from the Premier League, so I had to make a decision to leave. Players are not paid well and are not fed well. Sometimes, the players can go three days without eating. They have a poor transportation plan. The players are sometimes forced to use public transport, ‘trotro’, which is not good for the players.”
He added that former coach Nii Odartey Lamptey may have chosen not to reveal these internal problems, but stressed that the root causes are administrative.
“Nii Odartey Lamptey was in charge and perhaps could not let these things out, but for me, I will say it. The challenges of the club are down to administrative lapses, and so you cannot entirely blame the players for the current situation,” he said.
With just three points from 11 matches, Eleven Wonders remain bottom of the Premier League table. They face Dreams FC next in their Matchday 12 fixture, as the club continues its search for a new head coach.
