Ghanaian coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has set his sights on restoring Gor Mahia’s dominance in Kenyan football and pursuing continental success after being appointed head coach of the country’s most successful club.

The former Black Stars boss has signed a two-year contract and will be supported by fellow Ghanaian Bismark Kobby Mensah as assistant coach and George Owu as goalkeepers’ trainer.

The new technical team replaces the previous staff led by former Kenyan international Zebediah “Zico” Otieno, who was dismissed following a disappointing 2023/24 season in which Gor Mahia finished second in the Kenya Premier League.

Speaking at his official unveiling, Akonnor expressed confidence in the club’s direction under his leadership.

“I will work closely with all stakeholders to achieve our targets. Together, we shall ensure this great club wins titles — both locally and continentally,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of team chemistry and internal culture as the foundation for long-term success.

“First of all, it’s about building chemistry among the players — strengthening their bond. They need to have that understanding, that love, that passion to play for one another, no matter what,” Akonnor noted.

While aiming for immediate results, the 51-year-old tactician highlighted the need for sustainable development, particularly through youth systems.

“Having a good youth system in place is very important for the club, and that is one key area I am keen on. Developing players through the ranks is quite vital, and I am a firm believer in working through the stages to achieve the best — not quick fixes for success,” he added.

Gor Mahia fans will be eager to see the former Asante Kotoko manager restore the club’s glory days and lead a strong charge in the CAF Champions League.

With a record 20 league titles, the Nairobi-based giants are banking on Akonnor’s experience to guide them back to the pinnacle of African football.

His appointment marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first Ghanaian to take charge of Gor Mahia.
