Former Black Stars head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has disclosed that he would encourage his sons to represent Ghana at the senior international level should the opportunity arise.
His eldest son, Charles Jesaja Herrmann, 25, recently joined German lower-division side FC Bocholt, while his younger son, Charles Kwablan Herrmann, has signed for Belgian top-flight outfit Cercle Brugge.
In an interview with Graphic Sports, Akonnor described his younger son’s move to Belgium as a significant milestone in his career and said he played an active role in ensuring the transfer process went smoothly.
The former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak coach acknowledged that both players, having been born and raised in Germany, have limited ties to Ghana.
Nonetheless, Akonnor said that as a father and a former Black Stars player and coach, he would not hesitate to guide them if the chance to play for Ghana presents itself.
“It’s difficult to convince them to come to Ghana because they grew up in Germany, but of course, if the need be or if the opportunity arises, we will be able to make that decision,” he said.
Jesaja, born in 2000, previously featured for German clubs including VfL Wolfsburg and Hannover 96 before completing his move to FC Bocholt.
His younger brother, Charles Kwablan Herrmann, born in 2006, is a highly rated winger who has impressed with Germany’s youth teams. He was part of the squads that won the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup and the UEFA U-17 European Championship, and in 2024, he moved from Borussia Dortmund to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
