The trial of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is scheduled to commence today, October 7, 2025.
This follows his appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, after honouring a directive issued by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine.
Chairman Wontumi faces charges connected to alleged illegal mining operations and mining without a valid licence, reportedly linked to Akonta Mining Limited, a company he is said to own.
He was granted bail to the tune of GH¢1 million ahead of today’s proceedings.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the primary charge concerns mining without a licence, adding that the full details of the case will be addressed during the trial.
“We are prepared to meet the matter in court, where the facts will speak for themselves. My client maintains his innocence, and we are ready to present our defence,” Mr. Appiah-Kubi stated.
