Calm restored in Kukurantumi after violent attack over suspect’s death

Residents storm Kukurantumi police station after suspect’s death

Police operations have resumed in Kukurantumi in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region after a brief withdrawal caused by violent clashes.

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, Nana Ampaw Kwame Addo-Frempong, confirmed the development in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.

He assured that calm has been restored, noting that although the Kukurantumi Police Station was temporarily closed, officers have since returned and are maintaining order.

“I’m in Kukurantumi as we speak, and I can tell you that the Kukurantumi station is a sub-station. The main Police District Command is in Tafo, which is just about five minutes’ drive away. There is also a police post in Osiem. But as I speak to you now, there is police presence even in Kukurantumi. The whole station is being guarded by officers, so there is calm. Everything is okay, I don’t want people to panic—everything is working smoothly,” he said.

The lawmaker also revealed that security authorities are expected to provide clarity on ongoing investigations into the recent disturbances. A meeting with the Regional and District Police Commands will take place to outline timelines for the completion of the probe.

The unrest erupted following the death of Bright Kena, popularly known as D-ball, who had been arrested for unlawful entry and theft. He later passed away while receiving treatment at the Community Hospital in Kukurantumi.

His death sparked confrontations between residents and the police, resulting in the temporary closure of the local station and the withdrawal of officers before their return.
