Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has explained the tactical adjustments that guided his side into the next stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The FA Cup champions sealed qualification to the second preliminary round with a 5-3 aggregate win over Nigerian side Kwara United.
The Porcupine Warriors edged the first leg 4-3 at the Accra Sports Stadium before securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Sunday’s return fixture at the M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta.
Reflecting on the triumph, Zito admitted the team had to correct errors from the first meeting.
“A lot changed because in our football industry we have occupational hazards, and that is what happened to us in Ghana,” Zito said.
“We revisited the first leg and realised the space and time we gave them. We worked on that. We knew they had experienced players, so once we denied them the space and time, they couldn’t play us. That’s what we did, and in the second half, we went for the goal,” he added.
With qualification secured, Kotoko will now prepare for a difficult second-round test against Moroccan heavyweights Wydad Athletic Club in October.
Before that, the Kumasi-based side return to domestic duty with a Ghana Premier League Matchday 4 clash against Heart of Lions at the Baba Yara Stadium.
