Book on prostate cancer launched in Tema

A book on prostate cancer authored by Ghanaian urologist Dr. Lemuel Davies Bray was launched on Sunday, September 12, 2025, at the Tema West Health Directorate conference room in a colourful and well-attended ceremony.

The book, titled “Understanding Prostate Cancer and Its Treatments”, serves as a simplified educational resource for both clinicians and patients.

Dr. Bray, a consultant urologist at Tema General Hospital, explained that his motivation stemmed from a desire to go beyond prescribing medication by contributing his quota to curb the devastating impact of prostate cancer on lives and livelihoods.

“I have attempted to answer most of the frequently asked questions about prostate cancer, provide helpful information on the most current treatment modalities and a practical guide in the decision-making processes for both clinicians and patients,” he said at the launch.

The 22-chapter book covers a wide range of topics, including prostate enlargement, inflammation of the prostate gland, global perspectives on the disease, as well as treatment options for both localized and advanced prostate cancer.

Speakers at the event, including Dr. Ralph Armah, Medical Director of Tema General Hospital, and Prof. Matthew Yamoah Kyei, Head of the Urology Department at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, praised Dr. Bray for his diligence and commitment, describing the publication as a valuable contribution to prostate cancer education and management in Ghana.

The launch was attended by representatives from the Ghana Association of Urological Surgeons (GAUS), staff of Tema General Hospital, health professionals, patient support groups, family, friends, and other stakeholders.

Copies of the book are currently available at the Outpatient Department (OPD) of the Tema General Hospital.
