More than 400 former employees of the Bogoso–Prestea Mines are facing severe hardship months after their dismissal, following the takeover of the mine by Heath Goldfields Limited (HGL), according to Lead Convener Gabriel Madobi.

Speaking during a demonstration by the affected workers, Madobi revealed that many have gone months without receiving their legally mandated benefits. He added that some former workers have tragically died while waiting for their entitlements, leaving their families in distress.

The group is appealing urgently to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, to intervene.

Madobi explained that although the Minister had earlier directed Heath Goldfields Limited to pay all outstanding benefits within 120 days, the company has failed to comply. As a result, ex-workers continue to struggle to feed their families, access healthcare, and keep their children in school. Elderly and medically unfit workers who dedicated decades to the mine are now living in poverty.

In a petition dated December 10, the former workers are demanding immediate payment of all outstanding provident fund arrears, severance packages, and end-of-service benefits. They warned that failure to act could trigger intensified public protests.

Receiving the petition on behalf of the Minister, the Deputy CEO of the Minerals Commission in charge of Support Services, Emmanuel Kwamena Enyimah, assured the workers that the Minister is aware of the situation and will take steps to ensure they are compensated.
