Black Stars midfielder Francis Abu has made encouraging progress in his rehabilitation, returning to gym work this week as part of his recovery plan.

The Toulouse FC player suffered a serious ankle injury during Ghana’s friendly against Japan at the Kirin Cup last month at Toyota Stadium. The injury occurred about ten minutes into the second half when Abu attempted to block a shot, forcing his substitution for Alidu Seidu.

The 24-year-old was stretchered off amid visible concern from teammates and immediately taken to Toyota Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment. He subsequently missed Ghana’s second friendly against South Korea.

After spending a week in Tokyo, Abu returned to France to continue treatment with Toulouse. While he was initially expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season, signs indicate he could return to action before the campaign concludes.

A timely recovery could also put Abu back in contention for a spot in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup.
