The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has revealed that the Black Queens are yet to receive their $350,000 prize money for finishing third at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ghana clinched the bronze medal after defeating South Africa on penalties in the third-place playoff, following the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) revised prize structure for the tournament.
Speaking to 3Sports, Asante Twum confirmed that the funds had not yet been disbursed.
“The money has not been paid yet. I don’t know the plan of the Executive Council, but you know that in competitions of this nature, whenever there are inflows, the government comes in,” he said.
He added that engagements with the Ministry of Sports would be necessary to determine how the funds are allocated.
“But there ought to be an engagement. So we will engage the ministry. If they call for budget expenditure or whatever, we will show it to the ministry.
We played in Côte d’Ivoire. The FA took care of everything. The two friendly matches. We travelled to Senegal for two friendly matches; the FA took care of everything. We spent 10 days in Morocco before the tournament, same,” he explained.
The 2024 edition marked Ghana’s return to WAFCON after a six-year absence, with their last appearance in 2018.
