Black Queens will win the WAFCON in the future – Kim Lars Björkegren

Black Queens coach Kim Lars Björkegren has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in the near future, following their impressive third-place finish at the 2024 edition in Morocco.

The tournament marked Ghana’s return to the continental stage for the first time since 2018, and the team secured the bronze medal after edging South Africa on penalties in the third-place playoff.

Speaking to the media upon the team’s arrival in Accra on Monday, Björkegren praised his players for their growth throughout the competition and believes the current squad has what it takes to go all the way in future tournaments.

“Tactically, we learnt from the first game and made some small changes,” the Swedish gaffer said.

“The future is really bright in Ghana, so we need to keep working hard. We can see how close we are… of course we know we can win it [the AFCON],” he added.

Ghana’s campaign began with a loss to South Africa, followed by a draw with Mali, before a crucial win over Tanzania secured a place in the knockout stage.

The Black Queens then defeated Algeria in the quarterfinals but narrowly lost to hosts Morocco in the semifinals.

Despite missing out on the final, the team demonstrated resilience and determination to bounce back and claim third place—offering renewed hope for the future of Ghanaian women’s football.
